798 Art District

A couple days ago Jayson, Ashley and I went to check out Beijing's famous 798 Art District. The area is filled with galleries, cafes, little shops, crafts, vendors, and outdoor art. I absolutely loved it! The food was pricey, but all of the galleries were free, so we popped our heads into a few to take a peek around. Most of the galleries are converted factories because the 798 district used to be the technology hub in Beijing, crucial in the production of some of China's first satellites and nuclear bombs. Now the area is brimming with Chinese hipsters complete with big plastic glasses and brightly patterned scarves. We ate dinner at one of the many Western style cafes and afterwards enjoyed some overpriced gelato. Before leaving we stopped to look in the bed of a truck where a man had mountains of pottery he was selling. It was any three pieces for $10 kuai!!! I couldn't pass that up, so I bought a couple vases and pretty Chinese shot glasses. A lot of the pottery said World Market on the bottom, as Mom would say they probably "fell" off the back of a truck and ended up here for a quarter of the price. All in all it was a great and relaxing afternoon.
